The sport of motocross has grown exponentially through the years and has produced historic races and events year in and year out. The different riders from decade to decade have helped define the sport and made it the success it is today.

With so many riders through the years, it can be a little difficult to narrow down who is the greatest of all time. Everyone has their own opinion, but here is our top five list of the greatest motocross racers in history.

1. Ricky Carmichael

We are not completely sure if this one is even debatable, and his numbers do the talking for him to place him in a class of his own. The nickname he has even earned for himself is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). Born in 1979, Carmichael is the winningest motocross racer in the history of the sport.

In an 11-year span from 1996 to 2007, Carmichael was the most dominant racer on the planet, racking up an unprecedented 150 total professional wins. He is also the only rider to ever accomplish an undefeated season in AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) Motocross, something he pulled off an incredible three different times.

2. James Stewart

James Stewart, better known by his nickname "Bubba," is one of the most exciting and recognizable faces in the history of motocross and has seen incredible success in the sport since he entered his first race as a 4-year old. Stewart also created and coined the famous "Bubba Scrub" move, a fantastic maneuver off a jump to pass riders more easily.

While he may have been inconsistent at times, when he was on, he was unstoppable. Going an impressive 24-0 in 2008 in the 450 Class, Stewart is easily in the conversation for the best racer of all time.

3. Bob Hannah

Still one of the most successful racers in the history of the sport, bob Hanna turned professional when he was just 19 years old with Yamaha and earned the nickname "Hurricane" up to his retirement in 1985. Inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999, Hannah racked up an incredible 70 professional wins and took home three national championships including eight consecutive 250 outdoor nationals.

4. Jeremy McGrath

A household name in racing, McGrath is one of the most successful Motocross and Supercross racers in the modern era and has transcended the sport itself. Racking up an incredible 89 professional wins in his illustrious career, finished his career with seven AMA Supercross Championships and one AMA National Motocross Championship.

5. Stefan Everts

The Belgian racing legend retired from the sport in 2006 and is regarded in many circles as the truly greatest rider of all time. Racking up an incredible 101 wins in his outstanding career, Everts won championships in the 125cc, 250cc, 500cc, and MX1-GP divisions. Retiring as a 10-time world champion and is the only rider to win a World Championship on four different manufacturers, it is easy to put him in the conversation as greatest of all time.
