In 1984 the CR500 first went into production and came on sale later that year. It was originally known as the "Ping King" and although they can be quite rare there are a few nice examples around. Keeping a bike like that in good condition often requires the quality parts you will find here on this site.
The CR500R had a 491cc liquid cooled 2-stroke engine that could make 58 HP, making it the most powerful motocross bike that Honda had ever produced. This model was difficult to kickstart as it had a big single bore but it could produce an impressive top speed of 92 mph.
The CR500R was incredibly powerful. However... this meant it was it was extremely difficult to ride because of the pure power it produced.
It had a fair innings and was produced from 1984 until 2001 when the CR500 was eventually discontinued to make way for the CRF450 four-stroke. Though the CRF450 was slightly heavier, the difference in peak horsepower was marginal, the power band on the four-stroke motorcycles proved to be much more linear and easier for the rider to use.
